How to watch your favorite sports teams when you move out-of-market

You may have just moved, but that doesn’t mean you want to leave your favorite teams behind. While you might no longer be living in your team’s market, you can still watch their games from anywhere in the country. In this guide, we’ll walk you through all your options for watching out-of-market NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL games.
How to watch out-of-market NFL games
Unfortunately, it’s not easy (or cheap) to watch out-of-market NFL games in 2022. You have two options, and they’re both through DIRECTV’s NFL SUNDAY TICKET package.
Sign up for DIRECTV
If you live in a house that has the ability to install a satellite dish, you’ll have to sign up for DIRECTV to watch out-of-market NFL games. The good news is that DIRECTV is currently including the 2022 NFL season in all of its packages at no extra cost, so you’ll only need to pay $69.99/mo. (plus taxes and fees) to start watching your team.
That said, you will have to commit to a two-year contract, and the price goes up in the second year.
NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV streaming plan
If you can’t set up a satellite dish at your new address — if you live in a multi-unit building like an apartment or condo — you have the option to purchase NFL SUNDAY TICKET without a DIRECTV subscription. This allows you to stream every out-of-market NFL game through the SUNDAY TICKET app.
Package | Price for 2022 season | RED ZONE CHANNEL® included |
NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV | $293.94 | ✘ |
NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV MAX | $395.94 | |
NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV U | $119.94 |
Wait for 2023
The good news is that this is the last season that it will be so difficult to watch out-of-market NFL games. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said earlier this year that the platform will be fully available on a streaming service in 2023. If you don’t want to install a DIRECTV dish (and commit to a two-year contract), you only have to sit out one season to wait for more options.
How to watch out-of-market NBA games
It’s much easier to watch your NBA team’s out-of-market games after your move. All NBA games are available through NBA League Pass, and you have several options to choose from.
Package | Monthly price | Annual price |
Team Pass | $13.99 | $89.99 |
League Pass | $14.99 | $99.99 |
League Pass Premium | $19.99 | $129.99 |
NBA League Pass lets you stream every NBA game outside of your market on one device at a time. So if you live in Portland, for example, you won’t be able to stream Trail Blazers games since they’re in your home market.
League Pass Premium is the exact same, only you can stream the service on two devices at one time — a good option for houses divided by NBA loyalties. Both League Pass and League Pass Premium also include NBA TV.
Finally, you can opt for Team Pass, which lets you pick one team to follow for the entire season.
How to watch out-of-market MLB games
The MLB also offers its own out-of-market streaming service for baseball games called MLB.TV. This gets you every regular season out-of-market game, and you can even watch up to four games at once. A subscription costs $25/mo. or $130 for the entire season upfront. You can also follow one team for just $110 per year.
How to watch out-of-market NHL games
The NHL’s streaming home is now ESPN+, which will carry every out-of-market game for the first time in the 2022-2023 season. The service costs $9.99/mo., or you can bundle it with Hulu and Disney+ for $13.99/mo. In addition to getting every one of your favorite team’s NHL games, an ESPN+ subscription includes access to exclusive hockey shows, analysis, and archives.
