We’re so excited to put 2022 in the rearview mirror and look ahead to the possibilities 2023 holds — and that includes brand-new home decor. Each year, new interior design trends take hold, and for 2023, design experts are seeing plenty of home trends that take on a new and modern look, but also a rustic and nostalgic appeal. We picked some of our favorite trends that experts say will be big this year.

1. Viva Magenta

One of the best aspects of interior design is getting creative and experimenting with new colors. Viva Magenta, PANTONE’s color of the year for 2023, is a bold color that pops with personality. As a color descendant of the red family, Viva Magenta evokes strength, bravery, and passion. If painting your walls a shade of red feels a bit too ‘out there’ for you, try incorporating shades of red in your furniture and home decor.

2. Granny chic

Nostalgia as a trend often takes on different meanings, but for 2023, nostalgia takes the form of granny chic. Yes, decor that you may have quite literally seen in your grandparents’ house, like floral wallpaper, during your childhood is coming back in style. 

Design experts spoke with USA Today about how the rise in thrifting is prompting the blending of old and new furniture pieces. This is partially due to the rise in sustainability and wanting to have a furniture piece that has a story to tell. 

3. Artisan pieces and sustainability

Craft-related projects and hobbies have become more popular in recent years. Because of this, a lot of us have a new appreciation for artisan and hand-crafted pieces. This will be the year of filling our homes — though not excessively — with homemade pieces that are both our own and from some of our favorite creators and influencers.

According to design experts at Trade Mark Interiors, “Curating a heavy focus on the environment is guiding the design community to source items that are produced with zero waste, are artisan, or are up-cycled.  Ultimately, this is going to result in really interesting interiors!”

4. Neutrals and earthy colors

After the seemingly unpredictable nature of the past few years, it’s no surprise that neutral and earthy colors are making a comeback. Light shades of cream, gray, brown, green, and yellow are all comforting wall colors that also bring us back to nature. Pairing statement color furniture like purple, orange, and dark blue with neutrals is not out of the question either. 

According to design experts at Havenly, “As we head into 2023, we predict the second coming of 1970s aesthetics, from wood wall paneling and low-slung furniture to retro earth tones like trending brown, burgundy, cognac, ochre, and saffron.”

Retro-style furniture may have its place in 2023 as well. Saucer chairs have that curved retro aesthetic and are comfortable whether they are in style or not. Any cube-shaped shelving or decor you have would also add a nice touch.

5. Multi-purpose rooms

It’s no surprise that multi-purpose spaces are becoming a trend. You can utilize your indoor space much better by turning rooms in your home into multi-purpose rooms. 

The experts at Design 321 | Decorating Den Interiors say, “Open floor plans may be in, but many are looking for ways to create invisible boundaries and influence distinct multifunctional spaces. Some of the more recent popular trends we’ve seen in creating separate areas within large, open floor plans include using furniture for division, investing in dividers, and making invisible lines with color.”

Have your living room double as a home gym or office space. If your guestroom sits empty when no one is occupying it, why not use some of the empty space in there for something else? Set up an extra computer room, a craft spot, or move your gym or office equipment into the guestroom as well. 

6. Arches

One of the latest trends in interior design is incorporating arches into your home. Arch-shaped doorways and windows make spaces feel more connected but also still separate at the same time, creating a solid middle ground. 

According to Vaunt Design, “Following a trend towards sleek, minimalist interiors, modern buildings have tended to shy away from arches, instead opting for plain walls, rectangular doorways and open-plan spaces. However, indoor arches are making a comeback, particularly in the popular Scandi and Japandi trends that have emerged over recent years.”

Having arch-shaped doorways installed in your home can be expensive and out of the question for some. But you can try adding arch patterns into your home in smaller, subtler ways through arched mirrors, window treatments, curvier furniture, and arched decor pieces. 

7. Smart home integration

Incorporating smart home gadgets into your interior design is a smart move according to 2023 design trends. 

Design 321 | Decorating Den Interiors say, “Traditional interior design and decor has emphasized furniture, texture and color. These elements are still just as important as ever, but the digital landscape has made incorporating high-tech furniture and features into the design another priority for many homeowners.”

You can give your home a high-tech look by installing a home security system or by simply using smart home items around you home, such as smart lights, displays, or furniture. Just make sure your current internet connection is strong enough to handle any new devices you throw at it.
